Clearly this apparent hatred never really affected things, because the film is a cult classic, beloved worldwide, and spawned the career of a number of stars.
Starring alongside Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Seth Rogen, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader, and Joe Lu Truglio, it was Hill’s first leading role.
Despite the success of the film, however, Hill had tried to stop Judd Apatow from hiring one of his co-stars following his audition, where he ‘attacked’ and ‘insulted’ the Wolf of Wall Street star.
We’re talking about Christopher Mintz-Plasse, the American actor cast in the role of the iconic character of Fogell, who uses a fake ID with the iconic ‘McLovin’ name to buy booze. No surname. Iconic.
His performance is part of what makes the film as iconic as it is, with executive producer Judd Apatow certain that he was the man for the role after initial read throughs of the script with Mintz-Plasse.
Mintz-Plasse secured the role after an open audition window for McLovin, which saw him compete against a number of young actors for the role – many of whom were friends of his from drama class.
He was the only one to get a callback, and he went on to read for the role alongside Hill and Cera.
Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2022, Hill said that Mintz-Plasse was ‘really, really amazing off the bat’. But he added: “I think he was really annoying to me at that time.”
Apatow remembered Mintz-Plasse being ‘very caustic’, adding that he ‘attacked Jonah and did improvs insulting Jonah’.
Seth Rogen, who played Officer Michaels, added: “Jonah immediately hated him. He was like – ‘that was f**king with my rhythm. I couldn’t perform with that guy’.”
Apatow, who has also directed the likes of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, claimed that Hill didn’t like Mintz-Plasse as a result and went as far as saying ‘I don’t want him doing it’.
“That’s exactly why we’re hiring him. It couldn’t be more perfect,” Apatow recalled saying. “The fact that it bothers you is exactly what we want.”
Speaking at Fan Expo Chicago, Mintz-Plasse said: “Jonah Hill hated me so much after my audition. I get it, I was 17, I was not a professional actor, I was in high school and we’re playing high school kids.
“So Jonah’s roasting me – and you remember being in high school, you just like yeah it’s my f**king buddy roasting me, it’s not going to bother me, I’m going to roast him back. And that’s what I did in the audition.
Mintz-Plasse said that the pair quickly put the beef to one side, however, with Hill messaging him saying he should have ‘big bro’d’ him after the audition and took him under his wing.
The Hunger Games star, 34, appeared alongside actor and comedian Hill in the hugely popular movie which sees two astronomers attempt to warn humanity about their impending doom at the hands of a rapidly approaching comet.
Don’t Look Up had all the makings of a black comedy classic, from its stacked ensemble cast to appt observations towards our attitudes to climate change. However, it turns out that Lawrence had a difficult time on set in her scenes with Hill.
“It was really, really hard filming with Jonah, and just not ruining take after take, laughing,” she said.
“We one-time dedicated an entire day to him just improv-ing insults at me. It was amazing.”
Lawrence went on to praise Hill’s talent for improv, adding that ‘he and ‘Meryl were the only ones who should do that kind of improv.’
“I mean, he’s just a comedic master. I mean we all did some [improv] just not as well as Jonah,” she said.
One scene which didn’t feature in the script shows Hill’s character telling Lawrence and DiCaprio’s to: “Sit tight and assess.”
“The sit tight comes first then you’ve got to digest it, that’s the assessment period,” Hill says.
Lawrence reflects: “See? That wasn’t in the script Jonah.”
But, while filming Don’t Look Up sounded like a barrel of laughs, J-Law reminded readers that its sentiment is a lot more serious.
When asked what the ‘biggest thing’ people take away from the movie should be, she replied: “To stop handling information the way that we do now, where there’s like the truth and science and then politics, or you know, personal feelings involved.
“You know, we should all just be on the same page of, you know, taking care of our planet, and taking care of mankind.
“World peace would be my hope.”
This isn’t the only time Lawrence has opened up about her behind-the-scenes experiences on set, previously admitting that she needed to get ‘tipsy’ in order to kiss Chris Pratt in 2016 sci-fi romance flick Passengers to overcome shyness.
It’s even been reported that the actress makes things equally uncomfortable for her co-stars as well, with The Hunger Games’ Liam Hemsworth admitting she would eat foods such as garlic or tuna and then not brush her teeth before the pair locked lips.
Luckily for Hill, his interactions with Lawrence didn’t involve any kissing.
The Hollywood actor, 40, had been petitioning to legally change his surname for some time, according to legal documents.
In case you didn’t know, ‘Jonah Hill’ was actually a stage name and while ‘Jonah’ is the star’s real moniker, ‘Hill’ was not.
This, of course, isn’t unusual, with heaps of Hollywood stars adopting stage names during their careers.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the Oscar nominee first petitioned to drop Feldstein back in November 2022.
But it looks like this is finally official, according to legal documents seen by The Blast.
According to the outlet, Hill’s petition was granted.
The documents now read: “The petition is granted. Once the proposed decree is signed, it cannot be amended without a new petition to change name.”
Hill has never spoken publicly about his decision to drop his surname.
However, the topic did lead to a rather awkward moment for one journalist almost a decade ago, when they asked the 22 Jump Street actor about his surname in an interview.
Over on IMDb, Hill is listed by his former birth name – Jonah Hill Feldstein.
Wanting to fact check, journalist Hadley Freeman asked the actor why he had dropped his birth name.
“This is when everything goes weird and his palpable self-control breaks down,” Freeman said in her write-up for the Guardian.
“For a full 15 seconds Hill is silent aside from his breathing: it’s so heavy, I think at first he’s having an asthma attack.”
The actor and producer eventually responded, but didn’t give an answer.
Freeman wrote: “‘Can we just not?’ he whispers.
“‘Just … don’t’, he hisses’.”
It’s not clear why the topic was such a tricky one, but Hill’s family still use the Feldstein name, including dad Richard Feldstein, who is a tour accountant for Guns N’ Roses.
Meanwhile, sister Beanie Feldstein is also an actor, best known for her roles in the comedy-drama films Lady Bird and Booksmart.
While Hill has been trying to change his name for a while, he isn’t the only celeb to have done this.
For example, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul recently dropped ‘Sturtevant’ from his name, with his wife and son’s names also officially changed.
But when Jonah Hill took on a role in The Wolf of Wall Street, he only got paid pennies in comparison.
Despite the actor earning an Oscar nomination for his performance, he only got paid a mere $60,000 (£48,000) to appear in the iconic, ironically money-centric, film.
And there’s potential it could have been far higher – as you might expect.
The now 40-year-old featured as stockbroker Donnie Azoff in the film and admitted he’d happily just take minimum wage to be able to work with the legendary filmmaker, Martin Scorsese.
Speaking on The Howard Stern Show back in 2014, he said: “I got to f**king be in a Martin Scorsese movie and I just got nominated for an Oscar.
“I’m tripping out, Howard … I’m in shock. I’m totally in shock.”
So, absolutely buzzing at the idea of getting to work with the Shutter Island and Taxi Driver director, he would do anything for it to happen.
And I mean, the minimum wage for actors is still a whole lot heftier than what most of us make, but still.
“They gave me the lowest amount of money possible, that was their offer,” Hill said.
“I said, ‘I will sign the paper tonight. Fax me the papers tonight.’ I want to sign them tonight before they change their mind. I said I want to sign them before I go to sleep tonight so they legally can’t change their mind.”
Radio host Stern then cut in to clarify if that meant the actor ‘got paid $60,000 for that movie’.
The actor continued: “It was the minimum. I think SAG minimum is something like $60,000 before commissions and taxes.
“Yeah, for an almost seven-month shoot. I would sell my house and give him all my money to work for [Scorsese] … I would have done anything in the world. I would do it again in a second.”
He added: “It’s not about money for me. None of this s**t is about money.
“I want to make money to pay my rent, and hopefully have a family one day and have kids and stuff.”
Well, fair enough, worth it for the bucket list – and the Oscar nomination, of course.
Whether it be Channing Tatum in a gimp suit, the numerous shot at every single actor’s career with them playing themselves, or just one of the many, many weird scenes in the film, the actors were pushed to their limits of comfort comedically.
For those who live under a rock, This is The End follows a group of Hollywood celebrities, all of whom are playing heightened versions of themselves.
From Rogen and his fellow Superbad co–creator Evan Goldberg, the film has developed a cult following and managed to rake in over $125 million when it came out in 2013.
One actor who didn’t quite enjoy the male-focused and sometimes crude humour of the film, however, was Emma Watson.
Watson, who did make a small appearance in the film, walked off the set of the film, a move which Seth Rogen later said she was right to do.
The Harry Potter actor reportedly refused to film a scene involving Channing Tatum in a gimp mask being walked on a chain by a now cannibalistic Danny McBride.
Whilst unclear what the scene involving Watson would have entailed, a final version of this did end up making the film without her in it.
Rogen said in an interview with GQ in 2021: “I mean, I don’t look back on that and think: ‘How dare she do that?’ You know?
“I think sometimes when you read something, when it comes to life, it doesn’t seem to be what you thought it was.
“But it was not some terrible ending to our relationship. She came back the next day to say goodbye.
“She helped promote the film.
“No hard feelings and I couldn’t be happier with how the film turned out in the end.”
“She was probably right. It was probably funnier the way we ended up doing it.”
The film is fairly batsh*t, so it is relatively shocking that they got all the celebrities they did to agree to it.
In previous interviews, Evan Goldberg said he made it a goal of his to get actors to say ‘no’ on set, and the only holdouts throughout filming was James Franco and Seth Rogen.
