In February 2017, best friends Abigail “Abby” Williams, 13, and Liberty “Libby” German, 14, headed out to enjoy their day off from school.

They were dropped off at Delphi Historic Trails, a well-known hiking spot in the small town of Delphi, Indiana, and ventured onto the Monon High Bridge – an abandoned, 19-meter-tall railway bridge built in 1891. Despite its deteriorating condition, the bridge remains a popular landmark and a favorite photo spot.

Libby posted a Snapchat of Abby walking across the bridge, not knowing it would be the last photo either of them would ever take.

Shortly after, both girls were stalked and murdered in an attack that shocked the world and remained unsolved for years.

The teens were reported missing at around 5:30PM when they failed to meet Libby’s father at their arranged pickup spot. Their bodies were discovered the next day.

Their throats had been slashed, and their bodies were found with sticks and branches placed over them.

Experts believe the girls may have remained alive for up to 10 minutes after the attack, bleeding out side by side. Libby was found nude, while Abby had both her own clothes and Libby’s layered on top of her. No physical evidence of sexual assault was found, but prosecutors have stated that does not rule it out.

In an act of courage, Libby managed to record a video of the man stalking them on the bridge, footage that has now been made public in full for the first time.

For years, only a short clip of the suspect, known online as the “Bridge Guy”, had been released. In that clip, he can be heard instructing the girls: “Down the hill.”

Now, the full 43-second video recorded by Libby shows Abby walking ahead, with a man close behind her. At one point, Abby is heard asking: “Is he behind me?” before picking up her pace.

Libby then says: “See, this is the path that we go down,” while the phone camera points to the ground. She adds: “There is no path going there so we have to go down here.”

Both girls sound anxious and are heard sniffling and breathing rapidly. The video ends with the man saying “guys,” and one girl replying with a nervous “hi,” followed by his now-infamous command: “Down the hill.”

Prosecutors have stated that the girls may have mentioned a gun, although this part of the audio hasn’t been verified. A bullet recovered at the crime scene was later matched to a gun owned by local man Richard Allen.

In November 2024, Allen – now 52 – was convicted of both murders and sentenced to 130 years behind bars. He has always insisted he is innocent.

During the investigation, Allen reportedly confessed to the killings multiple times, to prison staff, a psychologist, and his own wife. Despite this, his supporters have continued to defend him, even launching a website where they shared the newly released video as part of what they describe as “post-conviction legal work,” per News.com.au.

Allen’s defense had attempted to blame the murders on Odinists, followers of a Norse pagan religion, claiming the girls were victims of a “ritualistic sacrifice.” However, a judge ruled the theory inadmissible due to a lack of supporting evidence.

In the days following the murders, Libby’s grandfather Mike Patty told PEOPLE how inseparable the girls were. “She went hiking often,” he said of Liberty. “We talked all the time about safety, it was something that I stressed, but I guess not enough.

“We’re not doing so well,” he added. “I can’t imagine why they were killed. I just don’t know, my mind is really mush right now.”

After the guilty verdict, Libby’s grandmother Becky Patt told Dateline that justice came with complicated emotions.

“Do you say there’s winners?” she said. “We got our verdict, but that didn’t bring the girls back. It doesn’t give us closure. It gives us a little bit of peace to know that he can never hurt another person again. And that’s where he should be. But is it happy? Not really.”
