The baseless internet rumor has circulated for years but went viral again recently after a social media user shared an AI-generated video of the six-year-old’s photo morphing into that of the 40-year-old singer, captioned: “Wake up ppl.”
The post also had the comment: “iykyk”, meaning: “If you know, you know,” and was set to Katy’s 2012 song ‘Wide Awake’.
JonBenét was just six years old when she was tragically murdered in her own home on December 25, 1996.
The young beauty pageant star’s body was found in the basement of her family’s home but her killer has never been found.
Despite JonBenét’s body being discovered, a wild conspiracy theory has often circulated that she is actually alive and is popstar Katy Perry, given the pair share a small resemblance.
See the video here:After the latest video went viral, Katy herself took to the comments to address it, writing: “Wait, am I?”
Her comment quickly racked up over 5,000 likes, but left people divided, as some commented on her quick wit, writing: “lmao this is amazing,” and: “this is my roman empire”.
Others added: “omg the queen hath spoken,” and: “omg mystery solved”.
Some criticized the star for drawing attention to it, as it could be seen as disrespectful to JonBenét’s family and her memory.
They wrote: “no please don’t joke like this. The little girl was murdered and her family destroyed.”
Others added: “KP, that is disgusting. If you’re going to encourage this and not offer proof….how could you?!” and: “you clowning on it Everytime it’s mentioned isn’t a good look.”
Another commented: “this is psychotic Katy, someones child died.”
It comes days after JonBenét’s father, John Ramsey, asked police to retest every piece of evidence from the murder scene to see if any DNA could find her potential killer.
The Daily Mail featured an interview with a woman who claimed her ex was the killer, and the 81-year-old father believes advances in genetic genealogy could help finally determine who brutally assaulted and took his daughter’s life.
He believes that unidentified male DNA that was found in JonBenét’s underwear and beneath her fingernails as well as the makeshift garotte embedded in her neck could hold the answers to finally crack the case.

Her father even offered to pay for the tests himself, which the police department said would not be necessary.
John told the outlet: “DNA technology has advanced dramatically since the last round of testing was done in the mid-2000s.
“If it doesn’t work then I’ll praise the police for trying everything they could […] but, to me, it’s just so obvious where the police’s time needs to be spent.”
