The Mist, which is the 2007 adaptation of the 77-year-old’s novella, has been praised for its hauntingly unforgettable twist.

The film follows David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son Billy (Nathan Gamble) as they venture to a grocery store following a violent storm.

“Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others inside the shop,” the film’s synopsis reads. “Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice.”

Directed by Frank Darabont – who also helmed The Shawshank Redemption – the film is a masterclass in psychological horror. But while the monsters lurking in the mist are terrifying, it’s the film’s shocking ending that truly cements its reputation.

Even after 18 years, The Mist continues to haunt viewers with what many consider one of the most devastating endings in horror history.

One fan took to X (formerly Twitter) to urge others to see it while they still can, writing: “The ending of The Mist, was the most chilling in movie history IMO. If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s a must.”

Another viewer called it “one of the most brutal movie endings to date,” while a third added: “Man, let me tell you, not a lot of movies will get you shaking your head over the ending like this one will.”

A fourth person, reflecting on a recent re-watch, admitted: “Not many movies make me turn my head but this one is so stressful and I have winced so many times.”

According to JustWatch, The Mist will be leaving Amazon Prime Video in the US on Monday, March 31. That means fans have just a few weeks left to experience – or relive -the film’s unforgettable terror.

For those in the UK, however, there’s good news: The Mist remains available to stream on the British version of Prime Video, with no removal date in sight.
