Yep, pretty hard to believe isn’t it? With the actor having starred in some of the funniest flicks of the century, such as Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Bruce Almighty, How The Grinch Stole Christmas… I could go on and on, but long story short is that Carrey is one of the industry’s most loved actors.
But it looks like not everyone is a fan.
Jim Carrey is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s funniest actors (Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic)
That film was 1995’s Batman Forever, and that actor was Tommy Lee Jones.
Carrey played The Riddler in the movie, which also starred the likes of Val Kilmer, Nicole Kidman and Drew Barrymore, while Jones portrayed Harvey ‘Two-Face’ Dent.
So, what exactly happened between the pair that resulted in Jones expressing his hatred for the comedian?
According to Carrey, they bumped into each other at a restaurant the night before shooting a big scene together.

“The maître d’ said, ‘Oh, I hear you’re working with Tommy Lee Jones. He’s over in the corner having dinner’,” Carrey explained. “I went over, and I said, ‘Hey Tommy, how are you doing?’ and the blood just drained from his face.”
“He got up shaking,” Carrey went on. “He must have been in a mid-kill-me fantasy or something like that. And he went to hug me, and he said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you’.
“And I said, ‘What’s the problem?’ and pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart. And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery’.” Ouch.
“I was the star, and that was the problem,” Carrey said, before being keen to admit to Jones’ own excellence.
“He’s a phenomenal actor, though. I still love him,” he added. “He might have been uncomfortable doing that work, too. That’s not really his style of stuff.”
Nevertheless, Jones’ dislike of Carrey appears to have meant the pair have never worked together since.
Carrey claims that Jones told him he ‘hated’ him (Warner Bros.)
While Carrey’s usual style is to be the funnyman, not all of his projects have gone down this path – including one of his most successful roles which, initially, he wasn’t even paid for.
Carrey starred in Yes Man – which so happens to have made it to number five on Netflix’s ‘Top 10’ list this week – in 2008, but he took quite the risk when it came to his salary.
Though the flick had a budget of $70 million, Warner Bros. opted to not pay Carrey’s salary out of that sum. Instead, the actor apparently took a 36.2 percent stake in the whole profit of the movie – which was one hell of a risk if the movie would have flopped.
Thankfully it didn’t, and the actor reportedly made between $35 million and $50 million, as the comedy was a box office success, raking in $223 million worldwide.
Win win, eh?
